What if…

  • With a 10% yearly step-up, you can start with ₹5,005 a month.

  • Starting 5 years later needs ₹23,481 a month.

Assumptions and method

Formula

  • Target at goal = target today · (1 + inflation)^years
  • Savings at goal = savings · (1 + i)^months
  • Monthly SIP solved by bisection so savings + SIP reach the target at the goal date

Conventions used

  • Monthly rate: i = (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1 (Effective (12% = 12% a year))
  • Money moves at the start of each month, so an instalment earns that month's return.

Modelling notes

  • Target in today's money grows with inflation (6.0% a year) to the goal date.
  • Savings and the SIP earn a constant 12.0% a year.
  • The SIP stays the same every month.

Not included

  • Market ups and downs: the same return is assumed every month.
  • Expense ratio, exit load and stamp duty, unless your expected return already allows for them.
  • Income tax on gains (turn on the post-tax option to estimate it).

This is an illustration based on the return you entered. Actual returns vary and may be lower or negative.

How it works

Becoming a crorepati is a goal in today’s money: ₹2 crore in 30 years will not buy what ₹2 crore buys today. The planner first grows your target with inflation to the age you choose, so you plan for the money you will actually need.

Your existing savings keep growing at the expected return. The rest of the gap is filled by a monthly SIP, worked out month by month (flat, or rising every year if you set a step-up). The chart shows how much of the final value is your own money and how much is growth.

Returns are an illustration between 2% and 13% a year, the range AMFI allows for calculators. Markets do not move in a straight line; review the plan every year.

How we calculate

Frequently asked questions

Why does ₹2 crore become more than ₹11 crore?

At 6% inflation, prices roughly double every 12 years. Over 30 years they grow about 5.7 times, so ₹2 crore of today’s spending power needs about ₹11.5 crore at 60. Planning for a nominal ₹2 crore would leave you with about ₹35 lakh of today’s value.

How much should I invest monthly to become a crorepati?

It depends on the target, the years left and the return you assume. With the defaults (₹2 crore in today’s money, age 30 to 60, 12% a year, 6% inflation, ₹25 lakh already invested) the planner works out the monthly SIP for you. Starting earlier lowers it a lot.

Why can I not enter a return above 13%?

AMFI asks mutual fund distributors to illustrate returns between 2% and 13% a year in calculators. Higher figures make plans look easier than they may be.

What does the step-up do?

A step-up raises your SIP every year, usually with your salary. You start with a smaller SIP and still reach the same goal.

Why is your SIP value lower than Groww or ET Money?

Most apps convert a yearly return to a monthly one by dividing by 12 (r/12), which quietly compounds to more than the rate you typed: 12% becomes 12.68% a year. We use the effective monthly rate (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1 by default, so 12% means exactly 12% a year. Over 10 years the difference is about 3.5%. You can switch to the r/12 convention under Advanced settings to match other apps.
